The Batteries Directive 2006/66/EC (repealing Directive 91/157/EEC) came into force on 26 September 2006. The directive sets out rules applicable to all batteries and accumulators that have presence in the EU market. These rules include, among others, restriction on the use of cadmium in portable batteries and accumulators (PBA). Portable batteries and accumulators, including those incorporated into appliances, that contain more than 0.002% of cadmium by weight shall not be included in the market. However, the above requirement shall not apply to portable batteries and accumulators intended for use in emergency lighting, alarming systems, medical equipment, or cordless power tools. To enable the recycling industry and consumers to adapt to the substitute technologies, this ban was applied on December 2016.

The main objective of the prohibition of cadmium in batteries and accumulators intended for use in cordless power tools (CPTs) is to avoid negative environmental impacts that are related to this use. The most crucial objective of prohibition is to assess the impacts on environment, which will be caused by technical substitutes, by a possibly increased use of NiMH and particularly Li-ion technologies. On the other hand, the ban has increased the recycling process of Ni-Cd batteries.
